GENERAL FUNCTION
The Managing Optometrist is a clinical lead responsible for driving excellence in patient care, across a defined market. This role blends direct patient care with leadership responsibilities, spending approximately 70% of time in the exam lane and the remaining time coaching, managing schedules and supporting a team of optometrists.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Care
- Provide comprehensive eye exams and deliver high-quality patient care
- Model best-in-class patient experience, education, and handoff practices
- Lead by example in clinical excellence and ethical standards
Doctor Support & Development
- Coach and support optometrists across the assigned market
- Conduct monthly one-on-one calls with each doctor to review performance, patient care, and business needs
- Review doctor score card regularly and coach to behaviors that drive exam growth, conversion, and patient retention
- Ensure alignment with company standards for patient experience and clinical quality
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Support optometrist hiring process within market
- Lead onboarding for new doctors, ensuring a smooth transition into practice, culture, and expectations
- Provide ongoing mentorship and development for newly hired and tenured doctors
Operational Oversight
- Maintain and oversee doctor schedules across the region
- Approve PTO requests with a minimum of 30 days’ notice while ensuring appropriate coverage
- Monitor and ensure doctors are adhering to their scheduled hours and commitments
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Conduct regular reviews to ensure clinical accuracy, documentation standards, and compliance
- Identify opportunities for improvement and provide actionable feedback
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory and company guidelines
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree and active state licensure
- Strong leadership, communication, and coaching skills
- Proven ability to drive performance through KPI management and behavior-based coaching
- Experience in multi-location or regional leadership preferred
- Passion for patient care, team development, and operational excellence
